Decisive wins for British pair in women’s keirin quarter finals

Great Britain, Japan and the Netherlands will all have two riders in the women’s keirin semi finals, but Germany’s day is done with Pröpster and Schneider both finishing last in their quarters.

Finucane and Marchant both won their heats decisively with positive moves: but with a place in the top four enough to progress, their rivals could have been conserving energy for later in the day. We’ll find out shortly.

First three in each semi will contest the medals; the rest go to the B final. The semi draws keep all the teammates separated.

Gros is first to move, taking the front. Bayona begins her surge from 5th with a lap and a half to go. She takes the front at the bell, with Vece following. Gros is caught on the inside as Vece, van der Peet and – at the last moment – McCaig come over the top.

The pace drops as the derny exits. Finucane takes control, moving to the front with two to go. Pröpster wants to take her wheel, but can’t get around Wang. Umekawa comes through on the inside as Pröpster moves backwards. Jabornikova runs out of gas as the line approaches, and can’t contest fourth.

Van de Wouw moves to the front with a lap and a half left. But Marchant attacks as the bell rings, taking the lead and stringing the field out. Riders pass Gaxiola on her left and her right. Clonan in fifth knows she is in danger, but she can’t get ahead of Hong Kong’s Yeung.
