No real surprises in the first round of the women’s keirin at the Track World Championships in Denmark. Bayona, Finucane and Marchant all made winning returns to the arena after competing in last night’s 500m final.
The first heat was remarkably close, with Malaysia’s Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri only just missing out on a qualifying spot behind Bayona and Umekawa.
It was Australian national champion Alessia McCaig who took second behind Finucane in the round’s most competitive heat.
Van de Wouw was a comfortable winner in heat 4, with Czechia’s Jabornikova in second. Germany’s Prรถpster failed to finish (a crash, judging by the state of her skinsuit later in the day) but she is listed for the repechages in an hour’s time.
Just 19 thousands separated Gros and Sato in heat 4, finishing well ahead of the field, whilst Katy Marchant set the fastest finishing speed to win heat 5 ahead of Gaxiola. ‘It’s my favourite event,’ Marchant told the BBC last night – ‘it’s a bit of fun, get your elbows out, I’m really looking forward to it.’
Riders outside the first two will get a second chance in the repechages – again, with first and second making the next round. There will be four heats of 3 or 4 riders.
