Dutch star Lorena Wiebes added an unexpected extra title to her remarkable 2025 palmarès, taking the Netherlands national keirin title.
Wiebes has won world titles on the track in scratch and omnium this year, as well as the world gravel championship, and the points jersey in two Grand Tours.
But in Apeldoorn for Sunday’s national scratch race, she decided to enter the keirin – supposedly just to test herself in a new event.
Video on Instagram shows her making an early move with a lap and a half left, with only Steffie van der Peet able to follow. The pair opened up a big gap on the rest of the field, and Wiebes held on for the win, ahead of van der Peet’s lunge.
TrackPiste reports that van der Peet was later relegated to third, with Kimberly Kalee receiving silver.
But sprinters can calm down: Wiebes admitted that the standard could not be compared to international level, and insisted that she does not intend to switch to sprint events.
The exertion didn’t affect her priority event for the day: she also won the scratch, with an attack three laps from the finish.
