Hoffman and McCaig claim Oceania keirin titles

The Oceania Track Championships followed the UCI rankings, with the wins going to men’s current world number one-ranked sprinter Leigh Hoffman and the continent’s highest ranked woman Alessia McCaig.

McCaig started the final second in line behind favourite Ellesse Andrews, and stayed on her wheel until the last half lap, snatching the lead from the defending champion in the final few metres. Andrews held on for silver, with Kristina Clonan following in McCaig’s wake for third.

“I was proud of myself to stay controlled and patient and really hit it at the end,” McCaig said afterwards. “I got shuffled back but stayed patient and followed some wheels and had a bit left at the end.”

In the men’s event Hoffman, only seventh a year ago in Brisbane, added a first continental keirin title to the individual sprint gold he had retained the previous evening.

Drawn 4 in the final, Hoffman initially seemed happy to slide towards the back, but made his move over the top with a lap and a half to go, kicking hard as the bell rang, and dropping in at the front out of the first corner. Nobody could stay with him, and he had a gap of several bike lengths at the line.

Silver went to local youngster Jaxson Russell, battling hard to follow Hoffman’s path towards the front. Tayte Ryan left it late, leapfrogging last year’s champion Sam Dakin to take bronze – improving on his fourth last year.
