Ellesse Andrews came out on top in Sunday’s women’s final at Aomori, ahead of Hetty van de Wouw, in a reversal of last weeks’ result at Kokura.

It was the second successive one-two for the foreign female stars; of course, had Mathilde Gros not been disqualified in week one, it would have been three out of three.

It extends the streak by which every Keirin World Series race featuring a foreign women has been won by a foreign woman.

Local star Riyu Ohta 1 took up the front with just over half a lap remaining, with van de Wouw 2 charging from the back, and Andrews 5 on her wheel.

With Ohta tiring on the inside, Andrews rolled out of corner four, passing van de Wouw with relative ease for a comfortable victory by two lengths.

The two British men competing in the Keirin World Series, Matthew Richardson and Joe Truman were noticeable by their absence from Sunday’s men’s final, won by Ichido Sugata.

They each participated in ‘special selection’ undercard races on Sunday, after disappointing results earlier in the weekend – and both finished second.

The next round of Keirin World Series takes place from 10-12 July at Ito Onsen. Richardson, Truman and Andrews will compete again, with Mathilde Gros returning for the first time since the opening event.

The French rider was in Los Angeles this past weekend, for a star-studded series of UCI C2 competitions at the future Olympic velodrome in Carson. She picked up two bronze medals in sprint, beating Pauline Grabosch both times; and a fourth place in keirin, won by Lauriane Genest.
