Azizulhasni Awang says he has not heard ‘anything concrete’ from Malaysia’s sports authorities about whether he is still wanted for the next Olympic cycle: and national track cycling director John Beasley fears he could be days away from retirement.

In comments reported by The Star on Thursday, the Pocket Rocketman said: ‘If they continue playing around and are not prepared to treat this situation seriously despite it being a matter of national importance, then I believe it may be best for me to forget about the Asian Games, the World Championships and LA 2028 altogether.’

Malaysia’s national team director John Beasley said he could not understand why the authorities had not spoken to Awang directly.

‘Surely it is not too much to ask for some honesty, clarity and long-term planning,’ he told New Straits Times.

‘If the answer is yes, I believe he will commit himself fully and continue with the mission.’

But if no resolution could be found within a matter of days, Beasley warned that Awang would pull out of Asian Games preparations, and the upcoming UCI World Championships, and would announce his retirement if there was no conversation within the next couple of days.

‘The decision is now in the hands of the ministry and NSC. Please act quickly. Whatever the decision may be, Azizulhasni deserves the honesty and respect of hearing it directly.

‘After everything he has contributed to Malaysia, the country owes him that much.’
