Whilst keirin racers wait patiently for fresh news from DerbyWheel, one intended participant has filled her time by claiming a new world record.
Two-time Canadian keirin champion Lizanne Wilmot, now living in Australia, claimed the women’s Guinness World Record for 1 kilometre on a ‘penny farthing’ bicycle from a flying start, during a multisport carnival at Devenport in northern Tasmania.
Chasing a target of 2:22.32 seconds, set in London in October 2024, she recorded an official time of 1:52.75 – beating the previous record by almost 30 seconds.
‘It started with a one, and that’s all I wanted,’ she told the Tasmanian crowd. ‘The back straight was a tailwind, that was fantastic. It was coming through turn four, where it was just a slap in the face.’
Lizanne spoke to DerbyWheel last year about her hopes for the new competition.
