Egypt’s Shahd Mohamed retained her African keirin title with victory on the final day of the continental championships in Abuja, Nigeria.
With two laps remaining in the final, the riders squeezed together into corner one, and South Africa’s Amber Hindmarch – bronze in sprint and kilo, earlier in the week – was brought down on the inside, likely a result of a touch of wheels with a rider in front of her.
With the speed rising as the finish approached, Mohamed moved towards the front, claiming the sprinters lane with half a lap to go, and holding off the late charge of Nigeria’s Grace Ayuba for the win.

It was the third podium at the championships with the same 1-2, following the match sprint and kilo time trial.
Mary Samuel sat up just behind, resigned to a continental bronze.
