After a long and ominous silence following the crash which cost him a shot at Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow, Matthew Richardson has posted a video online showing he’s now back in training.

‘A little over a week ago, I couldn’t walk without support,’ he wrote on Instagram. ‘Lying in that hospital bed, I honestly couldn’t imagine being here this quickly.

‘There have been some pretty tough moments, and I know there’s still a long road ahead before I’m back to 100%.

‘I’m incredibly grateful for what my body has allowed me to do already, and for everyone who has been there for me along the way.

‘Not rushing it. Not looking too far ahead. Just taking it one day at a time.’

Richardson’s future participation in the Keirin World Series has now been formally cancelled: his online profile shows no scheduled participations.

The next major event in the global calendar will be the UCI World Championships in mid-October.
